star10 tpng Overpriced, and nowhere near as functional as you might think
By networkguru
I have to hand it to Fujitsu here. The marketing around this device is simply amazing. Sadly the functionality is nowhere near as incredible.First things first, out of the box, and unlike 90+ percent of every other vendor building IP-connected devices, you cannot use a built in web server to configure the device.Thats right, there is one, but it is verging on unusable. If you’re on a Mac OSX device, forget it. The built in “web management” is actually a .NET application that is downloaded onto your client computer, when you connect to the device web server, and then executed locally on your machine. There is no way to configure user accounts on the device itself, you have to use the admin tools remotely to be able to do that. You might think this is no big deal, but you cannot actually use the device to scan, email etc until you configure it with a user. Once you have done that, you can at least set the user to automatically log in, and remain logged in so that the device can be used. Now, you’re able to configure services. Never in a million years did I think the easiest service to configure would be “scan to FTP folder” – but it’s the only one we have working at the moment.Try setting up the Fax function – which relies only on a single partner (efax.com) and you’ll find that it doesn’t work until you set up email. When you set up email, the device will not talk to a standard SMTP server. It seems to need to be doing something proprietary. We still haven’t figured out what, because the troubleshooting logs provide no help at all, and the server is just seeing failed attempts to communicate. This device had a lot of promise, but totally and utterly fails to deliver. Try something cheaper, and please save yourself days of tap screen configuration hell.Happy Networking !

star30 tpng Slow OCR
By T. Larson
This is a sophisticated network scanner capable of providing scanning and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) independtly of a PC.But…. The Optical Character Recognition (which creates a searchable PDF) is quite slow… In my test it was between 30 seconds and a minute per page. Of course, this speed will vary with the complexity of the page.Since this scanner works independtly of a PC, while it is performing OCR on a scanned document, it can do nothing else. The result is that if you use this scanner for any significant amount of scanning, you will be waiting many minutes between each scanned document while the OCR process is performed. The much lower priced ScanSnap S1500 uses OCR that runs on a PC. Since even a low end PC can run OCR faster than the N1800, the lower priced S1500 is likely a better option for many people.

star10 tpng Generally Awful Experience
By Joseph
This device had my hopes high, yet dashed them at pretty much every turn. I purchased one of these to provide my users more network scanners without deploying more multifunction workgroup printers. The menu system is cumbersome to put it gently. Be prepared (by design) to input the same information over and over and over again. The very slow interface transitions make using this as a “small but numerous job” scanner impossible. When you couple this with the relatively small feed tray, larger jobs are out and it becomes pretty much worthless.I found the unit difficult to configure, slow to operate, and generally nowhere near worth this much trouble. When you add the price tag to the mix it pretty much makes this a deal breaker. The user management system on the device is extremely unintuitive. It seems to be geared toward having users type in their usernames and passwords (for ldap auth) every time they walk up to the device. They would be required to do this using the same touch screen whether the ftp locations are programmed with a username or not. This makes the users hate the device.Do not expect to easily configure this device to walk up, drop in some paper and push a button to scan. The user experience so far has been more like:a. Walk upb. Wait a minute for the device to become responsivec. fight with the touchscreend. cuss.e. walk down the hall to the other scanner. The .Net management “application” had numerous scripting problems.Even when I was able to get the scan to ftp function to work, it would timeout stating “Network Busy” after spinning the “wheel” for what seemed like forever. This happened just about every other time I tried to use the device. It’s worth mentioning that I have ten other multifunction scanners saving to the same ftp server with no problem. We will definitely not buy another of these devices and I recommend that you don’t either unless you enjoy suffering for some reason..
